Give Your Views on the Autism Act 2009 by 2nd June

The House of Lords Committee is launching its Call for Evidence on the Autism Act 2009 where you (autistic people, parents/carers, friends and family, professional working with autistic people) can contribute your views.

The Committee wants to understand how well the Autism Act, the Government’s autism strategy and the statutory guidance are working so that it can make specific, practical recommendations about what the Government should do next.

There is also a drop in at Ashton Library, Heginbottom Room on Tuesday 27th May, 12.30-2pm for people to share their views about this Call for Evidence and we could collate and share with the government. The committee wants evidence on key questions about how to improve support for autistic people, including:

  • How can public understanding and acceptance of autistic people be improved?
  • How can the Government improve assessment, diagnosis and post-diagnostic support?
  • How can the Government improve the identification and support of autistic people when they need it (including if they do not have a diagnosis)?
  • How can access to healthcare be improved?
  • How can community support be improved?
  • How can access to education be improved?
  • How can support for autistic people to find and stay in work be improved?
  • How can support for autistic people who are in contact with the criminal and youth justice systems be improved?

Contributions can be made in whichever of the following ways is most accessible for you:

  • You or a friend/family member/ carer can write your responses to each question in a Word document online using this form.

Or

  • You can respond to the questions via voice recording (these will be transcribed into a published written document once submitted).Or
  • You can work with an organisation that supports you to complete your response (i.e. A Team, People First, Tameside Arts, OKE etc.)

Or

  • As apart of the TAN they will be running drop in events for you to come along to and contribute with the support of TMBC staff. Dates will be shared soon.

The following versions of the Call for Evidence will be available:

  • Conventional version
  • Pdf version with table of contents
  • Easy Read version (to be published shortly)
  • Audio version (to be published shortly)

Further information is available on the Committee’s website. You can contact them at HLAutismAct2009@parliament.uk

The Committee have said that you should try to make sure that your submission is no more than six pages long in total. If your submission is longer than six pages, you should include a one-page summary. This is because they may receive a lot of submissions from different people and we want to be able to consider each one carefully.

All written contributions or voice recordings can be emailed to HLAutismAct2009@parliament.uk

The Call for Evidence is now until Monday 2nd June.
