Parents and carers across Tameside can now get face‑to‑face support on childcare, early education, and family services directly from their local family hub.
The Family Information Service (FIS) is offering in-person advice sessions to help families navigate childcare options from birth up to school age, as well as wider support for children up to 18 years old, or up to 25 years old for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
FIS advisers can provide clear guidance on accessing Ofsted‑registered childcare, including private day nurseries, pre-schools, playgroups, nursery classes, out‑of‑school clubs, and holiday clubs. This includes understanding childcare funding options such as 30 hours free childcare, 15 hours early learning, and Tax-Free Childcare.
The team help families who are new to childcare or finding it difficult to secure a place that meets their needs – including a brokerage service where they can contact childcare providers on a family’s behalf to explore availability.
Their support also includes applying for free school meals, or completing online applications for primary and secondary school places.
In addition, there is guidance for those looking at becoming a registered childminder or setting up a childcare business.
Sonia, a parent of one from Hyde said: “I found FIS to be a positive experience. The person I spoke to at FIS was really helpful and informative. This is my first child, so I was confused with all of the different types of childcare funding and FIS explained everything perfectly.”
Depending on a family’s enquiry, the team can also make referrals to other services and provide contact details for additional support.
You can meet the team at family hubs across Tameside. To book an appointment or make an enquiry, call 0161 342 4260 from Monday to Friday between 9am–12.30pm and 1.30pm–5pm. The team can also be emailed at fis@tameside.gov.uk
